Revenge graphic organizer.doc Have students brainstorm times in their lives when they had to make a choice between taking revenge or showing mercy. Have them create a chart to show the effects of both options. They should compare their charts to Bacon's arguments.

DISCUSS:

Share out about a time when you had to choose between taking revenge and showing mercy. What do you think Bacon would have said to you? Would he have agreed or disagreed? Find a sentence or line from Bacon's "On Revenge" that would apply to your situation.

Write:

  • Having read Wiesenthal's account and related texts, write a two-page argument that takes a position on whether the Nazi soldier deserves forgiveness and that synthesizes information from two to three different sources.
    • Formulate a clear central claim (position).
    • Support claims with logical reasons.
    • Use evidence from multiple sources to support reasons.
      • Use evidence from 2-3 different texts read within unit (The Sunflower, Marcuse's essay page 207, Langer's essay page 186, Bacon's essay).
    • Develop argument into a full two-page piece.
